Designed in collaboration with friends, and top design studio, Freadman White, this project responds deeply to its Fitzroy roots and its unique location along Rose St. Famed for its weekend market, the site has both cultural and touristic appeal. Our response navigates the many complex interfaces and surrounds – with heritage built form to the south, the market to the north, midscale residential to the east, and a hotel to its west. Its corner location however, allows the building form to express a strong ‘landmark’ presentation, with a finegrain response at ground level contributing to a far more activated and responsive street scape. Oversized brick piers at lower levels create a highly tactile and textural base, with an inverted and scaled down form at upper levels expressed in concrete.
